Health Benefits Of Wine

Is there anything better than a glass of red wine on a Friday night after a long week?! We often think of wine as a guilty pleasure, but there are actually some very interesting health benefits to the odd glass of cab sav!

Before we start it is important to bear in mind that the term “moderation” generally refers to one glass of wine per day for most women.

The first amazing benefit of wine (just red wine in this case) is its anti-aging properties. Red wine contains a compound called resveratrol, which research suggests may increase life span! And not only this, but as resveratrol reduces the stickiness of blood platelets it helps to keep blood vessels open, which results in better blood supply to the brain. This is why researchers believe that moderate red wine drinkers also have a lower risk of dementia.

Wine may be great for our mental health in other ways too. A large study of thousands of men and women over 7 years found that those who drank up to a glass of wine per day were less likely to suffer from depression! Just bear in mind that drinking more than this regularly can actually increase the likelihood of depression.

Red wine is thought to help prevent breast cancer as well. This is believed to be due to the chemicals in red grapes that reduce estrogen levels but raise testosterone in premenopausal women, reducing breast cancer risk. Drinking most alcoholic drinks regularly has the opposite effect, so consider choosing red wine instead of champagne next time you have the option!

Finally, it has been shown that all types of wine may help protect from sunburn. When UV rays hit your skin they can harm your skin cells. However flavonoids in wine can reduce this effect!

The list of health benefits goes on and on… but hopefully the ones described here help alleviate any feelings of guilt you may have next time you feel like a glass of red!

Enjoy!
