Christmas is fast approaching and no doubt if you’re like me you’ll spend every spare minute over the next few days racing around the shops buying gifts, hiding in the bedroom wrapping them, and attending parties, Christmas bbq’s, after work drinks and family gatherings🎉🎉.
It’s no wonder that during this time all of our healthy eating and exercise routines that we’ve spent all winter working on go out the window! Apparently Australians gain on average 1kg over the festive season😱!
So how can we prevent the Christmas bulge? With a little planning it is possible! Here are some tips to help prevent you undoing all of your hard work!
Limit the binge sessions – remember that Christmas is only one day, so don’t treat the whole month of December as a free pass to over indulge at every function you attend. Pick a few good ones, for example Christmas Day, the work Christmas party and New Year’s Eve, where you will allow yourself a little bit more freedom without the guilt. But at the others try eating a small snack before you go so you’re not starving, and be more selective. Pick what you REALLY must have but leave the rest.
Avoid too much alcohol🍾🍾 –Alcohol is packed with calories, particularly if it’s made up with sugary mixers. Try inter-spacing alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic drinks such as sparkling mineral water, and use sugar-free mixers where possible.
Have lighter days in between the big ones – Take the opportunity on days without any social gatherings to really eat well. If you have over-indulged on a particular day be mindful of what you eat the following day, or have a BODi day!
Remember to move! Don’t let the rush of the Christmas season lead to a lack of exercise. It does get harder to attend your usual gym, group fitness or sport sessions but find other ways to move your body. Take a walk after dinner, play with the kids while they’re on school holidays, or if you’re away on holiday walking is a great way to explore... Running around the shops on Christmas eve also absolutely counts as exercise🛍!
Christmas is a great time of year for spending time with friends and family while enjoying some sun and hopefully finding a few presents under the tree (Naked eye-shadow pallet, thanks mum!). With a little will power and a few tricks you can beat the Christmas bulge and move in to the new year more fabulous than ever💁!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
